Dr. Luisa Casas Luque

Dr. Luisa Casas Luque is a Colombian Optometrist (OD) from La Salle University. She worked in public hospitals and saw the need to learn more about ocular disease and pharmacology to serve the community better. Luisa studied for her post-graduate degree at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, then traveled to South Africa for two years to work at Durban Westville University as a clinical resident. After completing the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) program from New England College of Optometry and serving in public health hospitals, she worked with the red cross flying doctors and participated in research projects in ocular disease. Luisa returned to Colombia to continue working in the public and the private sector. She then became a program director for the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC) for the Brien Holden Vision Institute. She implemented education courses for optometrists. Luisa also conducted the first RARE refractive error research in the region. She worked with universities and associations of the LAC region, improving the profession with the support of the NGO sector. Luisa has been an academic peer for the Ministry of Education, evaluating the optometry programs in Colombia and the high-quality accreditation for the Colombian council. She recently completed her Ph.D. in Education and Society, Magna cum laude, in education in compassion for health professionals.
