Sophal was born in a farmer family in rural areas of Svay Rieng Province (in the Southeast of Cambodia near Vietnam). During the civil war in 1970 almost in the countryside, there was fighting between rebels and the government. So the school was closed so he had to drop out. He moved to live in the refugee camp at Khmer Thai Border due to fighting. Eventually repatriated from the Khmer Thai border by UNHCR, he worked with Action Nord Sud (ANS), Handicap International France (HIF), and with the Operation Enfant Du Cambodoge (OEC). Sophol joined Seva in 2016.
